Acupuncture with Electro-Stimulation
Acupuncture with electro-stimulation is a relatively modern invention that involves an electrical current passing through a pair of needles.
An electro-acupuncture device creates a continuous electrical pulsed current, which is passed through the wires. The wires are clipped to the acupuncture needles inserted into the body. Electro-stimulation vibrates the needles producing a mild tingling sensation. In ancient China, doctors used to rotate the needles to amplify the effect of the treatment. However, no human can vibrate the needles as rapidly and continuously as an electro-acupuncture device can! This is an example of synergy between the ancient medicine and new technology that we can harness for the benefit of our patients. We choose the intensity and frequency of the electrical pulses depending on the patient’s diagnosis and constitution. Treatments involving electro-stimulation usually last 30 minutes, and most patients comfortably relax while receiving the treatment.
What are the Advantages of Electro-Stimulation Acupuncture?
In Chinese medicine, we have a saying, “If there is no free flow, there is pain. If there is no pain, there is free flow.” The free flow refers to the flow of blood and Qi circulating in the meridians. Electro-stimulation amplifies the effect of acupuncture by strongly encouraging the flow of Qi and blood; and thus this treatment works incredibly well to resolve any health conditions involving pain. The effectiveness of EA is confirmed by studies based on fMRI and EEG. This is one of the best ways to help the body function more optimally, as the increased blood flow supplies oxygen to the brain and tissues.
Additionally, electro-stimulation of specific points encourages the body to release different types of endorphins (endogenously produced opioid-like chemicals) including beta-endorphins, enkephalins and dynorphins. This results in instantaneous pain and anxiety relief, improved mood, and relaxation.
In addition to a calming effect and pain relief, electro-stimulation acupuncture is excellent at regulating the central nervous system. As a result, inflammation is reduced along with any chronic or acute pain, insomnia, and depression.
One major advantage of electro-stimulation acupuncture is the reduced treatment time. Almost any health condition responds faster to this type of acupuncture and requires fewer sessions to achieve the same effect.
What Conditions Respond Best to Electro-Stimulation Acupuncture Treatment?
At Luna Body and Mind we incorporate acupuncture with electro-stimulation for many of our patients because it is an amazingly effective tool for a variety of health conditions. Here are some examples of what electro-stimulation excels at helping:
- Chemotherapy induced neuropathy
- Acute or chronic back pain, gout, elbow pain, knee pain, ankle and foot pain, migraines/headhes and pain from injury, arthritis
- Insomnia
- Depression, anxiety, and stress
- Nausea
- Tinnitus
- Recovery from surgery (pain, swelling, bruising)
Is Electro-Stimulation Acupuncture for Everyone?
While EA is safe and effective for many people, it is not appropriate for everyone.
If you are pregnant, use a pacemaker, or have a history of epilepsy or strokes, you should avoid electro-stimulation. Traditional acupuncture without electro-stimulation is safe for everyone.
We encourage you to speak with your physician to confirm that electro-acupuncture is safe for you.
